I didn't like SaGa Frontier 2 or Unlimited SaGa at all though.
I played through this one 2 times w/o NG+.Īfter that, in about equal standing, I'd put the DS remakes of SaGa 2 and 3. This was also technically my first SaGa game I had ever played since I never got the Final Fantasy games on the gameboy and the fan translations for the Romancing SaGa series were completely unavailable at the time.Īnd Romancing SaGa 2 in 4th.
I think it's the best gameplay implementation of the more sci-fi themed SaGa games (SaGa 1 - 3). SaGa Frontier is probably the only game I've completed with all the characters and gets a third. Subsequent playthrough with different teams and different battle modes like commander mode add a ton of replayability to the game and I wouldn't be surprised if I get even more into it with the official localization. It maintains the mechanical complexity I know and love about SaGa games, but it's a lot easier to pick up and play than pretty much all the SaGa games except the Gameboy games or their remakes. Romancing SaGa 3 takes a strong second, although I've only played through the fan translation 3 times all the way through. Romancing SaGa: Minstrel's Song (300+ hours later, I'm on my 7th playthrough and will probably do an 8th playthrough to attempt 8 Fatestone Saruin) is easily my favorite.
